RollerCoaster Tycoon was developed almost entirely by a single programmer in an incredibly difficult & crude programming language known as Assembly. That programmer, a Scottish gentleman by the name of Chris Sawyer, is an actual genius.
The game was released in early 1999 and would go on to become one of the most important & commercially successful simulation games of all time. Its appeal was broad – allowing for young & casual gamers to build successful amusement parks using the pre-built coasters & rides, or creative perfectionists to design their own coasters piece by piece. It taught basic business management skills to a generation including pricing, staff management, equipment investment, layout / logistics, and customer service.
The legacy of RollerCoaster Tycoon carried on through several sequels & inspired a handful of modern titles including what many consider to be the spiritual successor to the series, Planet Coaster.
